PRESENTATION of UNIVERSITY OF LIEGE (ULiège) and ANAST

University of Liege (ULiège) – Coordinator of the project –

A State University of the French Community of Belgium. A large university (17 000 students) that includes a Faculty of Engineering (2000 Students). Within the Faculty of Engineering (Faculté des Sciences Appliquées -www.facsa.ulg.ac.be ) there is a Naval Architecture unit (ANAST - www.anast.ulg.ac.be ), which belongs to the ARGENCO department (www.argenco.ulg.ac.be).

At ULiège, students are graduating after 3 years (Bachelor degree in Engineering). After an additional two years, students get a master degree in various fields (civil engineering, mechanical engineering) but not in Naval Architecture. In order to be graduate in Naval Architecture, students have to follow a Complementary Master degree in Naval Architecture, which is organised in partnership with other European and non European Universities (ECN (Fr), ENSAN (Fr), HZS (B), UGAL (R), UPCT (Spain)). This Complementary Master is the degree delivered in the framework in the proposed EMSHIP Erasmus Master, as a double degree with Ecole Centrale de Nantes (ECN-Fr).

ANAST is the Naval Architecture Unit of University of Liege, Belgium (www.anast.ulg.ac.be).

ANAST has research, teaching and expert activities in Naval Architecture & Shipbuilding and Transportation Systems Analysis. Its research & teaching activities concern “design and ship construction” including ship design for production, structure analysis and optimisation, production cost assessment, production simulation, ultimate strength, inland navigation engineering but also “transportation systems analysis”, waterborne transport, traffic management of inland and sea navigation, transport costs modelling and market analysis, intermodal transportation.

Since 1980, ANAST has continuously developed an in-house LBR5 ship structure software to perform at the early design stage least cost optimisation of the ship scantlings. Industrial applications have been performed on gas tankers, fast ferry, tankers, Corsaire catamaran, etc.

ANAST has experimental facilities (towing tank of 100m and wave flume - member of the European Towing Tank Association (ETTC)), accessible to students for exercises and projects.

ANAST has close relation with professional and international scientific organisations, has co-operation with many universities, foreign government and research centres (in Europe, USA, South America, Asia and North Africa). Research activities of ANAST are Users and SME’s oriented (for instance: integrated CAD tool for SME’s and structure optimisation at preliminary design stage). ANAST has also an international industrial and scientific experience in project assessment (cost/benefit analysis, multi-criteria).

ANAST is a relevant partner in the field of ship structure assessment and particularly ultimate strength of stiffened panels and ultimate bending moment. On the other hand, ANAST has a large experience in “Marine Engineering” as involved in several EC projects (4th, 5th, 6th and 7th FP).

ANAST staff includes 25 professors and engineers. Key personnel are three professors including the ANAST’s Director and an Honorary Research Director of the National Funds of Scientific Research of Belgium. They will teach in the EMSHIP master. Two senior research engineers and 3 junior research engineers will propose their ability in the field of “ship design” including optimisation, production simulation and cost modelling. Within these persons, one is the Belgian ISSC correspondent and three belong to ISSC and ITTC technical committees (the most prestigious scientific organisations in the concerned field).
