Do you have a passion for engineering and want to take this into designing performance power and sailing yachts? If you are interested in analysing design for performance craft - from small racing boats to superyachts - Southampton Solent University’s internationally-recognised expertise in yacht and powercraft design will help build your theoretical and practical knowledge to take the first step into your career as a yacht designer. Students have full access to the University’s specialist facilities, including industry-standard CAD and drawing offices, structural testing laboratory, 5-axis CNC machine, laser cutters and 3D printers, as well as a fully-equipped specialist composite workshop, a 60m towing tank and static four-metre stability tank. Research projects are linked with our industry partners, which ranges from local shipyards to top international racing teams, thanks to the reputation of the University and the dense network of past graduates. The University’s expertise can be illustrated by the Solent Whisper, a foiling catamaran designed, tested and built at Southampton Solent University.
